TRANSPORT/ LIAISON/ COMMUNICATIONS AND TRAINING TWIN-ENGINED AIRCRAFT

HISTORY

Development and Career

At the beginning of the year 1961, the Nord-Aviation company launched a study for a new transport aircraft, in order to replace the Nord 260 Super-Broussard, four of which were used by the CEV (Centre d'Essais en Vol - Flight Test Centre). The Nord 262 prototype made its first flight on December 24th 1962, leading the way for the assembly of 3 pre-production aircraft, the first of which accomplished its maiden flight on the April 8th 1964.Nord 262A No1 operated by the CEPA. (©Francis Matthieu) The Nord 262 is a high-wing, large wingspan aircraft with a peculiar landing gear retracting in two large housings on both sides of a round-shaped fuselage. The French airline Air Inter took delivery of its first certified machine on July 24th 1964, the first of a total 110 to be built during the next 12 years.
The first four aircrafts meant for Air Inter were called Nord 262B, the other initial variant aircraft (fitted with two 1080hp Turboméca Bastan VIC), being designated Nord 262A. Later on, the development of the more powerful 1,145 hp Bastan VIIA triggered the production of the improved variants Nord 262C (civilian) and Nord 262D (military).

The French Air Force ordered 6 Nord 262A and 18 Nord 262D, while the Navy received 26 machines. The aircraft was also operated by foreign countries: Congo (1), Gabon (2), Burkina-Faso (1) and Angola (4). The plane could accommodate up to 30 passengers.

French Naval Aviation's "Frégate" (since 1967)

The French navy has been using 26 Nord 262 "Frégate" since 1967 to carry out the following missions :
-Navigators training.
-Staff and spare parts transport.
-Liaisons and communications.
-Maritime surveillance.
-S.A.R.
-MEDEVAC.

In the early 80s, as part of a budgetary measure, the Navy staff decided to upgrade their Nord 262A to a new Nord 262E version, in order to spare their maritime patrol Atlantic airframes. The upgrade consisted in the addition of an ORB-32 surveillance radar, a plotting system identical to that of the future Atlantique and Gardian, a ARAR 12 RWR and various HF radio equipment. The 'Alpha' (nickname for the Nord 262A) transport planes were eventually withdrawn from active service in 1997, while the 'Echo' (Nord 262E) delivery started in 1982.

In sections
A single Nord 262A was allocated to the S.E.S. at
N.A.S. Fréjus St Raphaël until 1986, the year it became the 10.S flight.

In flights
The 2.S flight based at
N.A.S. Lann-Bihoué operated the Nord 262 between 1970 and the March 10th 2000, the day it was officially deactivated. The unit's main duty was the carrying out of maritime surveillance and assistance missions, the later on behalf of the IIème Région Maritime (Second Maritime Area).

The 3.S flight based at N.A.S. Hyères operated the Nord 262A between 1970 and 1997 as well as Nord 262Es from 1985 to the year 2000. It was deactivated on the March 31st 2000 and its activities (similar to those of the 2.S), personnel and aircrafts were transferred to the 28.F.

The Fréjus St Raphaël 10.S flight had been operating a single Nord 262 from 1986 to 1995 to assist the C.E.P.A.
The 11.S flight, based N.A.S. Dugny-Le Bourget operated many Nord 262s between June 1967 and October 1995.

These aircraft were made available to the COMAR (COMmandant MARitime - Navy commanding officer) in Paris and the ALPATMAR (commandement de la PATrouille MARitime - Maritime Patrol command-in-chief).
The Nord 262 also superseded the JRB-4 and SNB-5 of 55.S flight in Aspretto (Corsica) from july 1st 1970 onwards.

The 56.S training flight, actually EPV (Ecole du Personnel Volant - Flight Crew Academy), based at N.A.S. Nîmes-Garons started receiving its Nord 262Es on December 15th 1982, as a substitute for its aging C-47D Dakotas which entered service in 1960, and were eventually retired in 1984.The EPV is in charge of training future Atlantique 2 pilots and navigators. The flight is disbanded on September 1st 2002. Its Nord 262Es were transfered to the 28.F squadron which moved from Hyères to Nîmes-Garons the same day.

In Squadrons
Following 2.S flight's deactivation on March 10th 2000, squadron 24.F (formerly operating Atlantiques but which had been shut down on September 1st 1998) got reactivated the same day at Lann-Bihoué and started operating 3 Nord 262E, backed up by four Xingus, and also the brand new Falcon 50 SURMAR. The Nord 262s had been retired since then.

The unit performs surveillance and assistance tasks.
The same goes in Hyères, with squadron 28.F (Previously operating the P2V-6 Neptune in Nîmes - activity suspended since the April 15th 1963) which took over the 3.Sflight, deactivated on the March 31st 2000. It operates 3 Nord 262E and four Xingu for surveillance, support and advanced training. After the disbanding of 56.S/EPV flight, it moved to Nîmes-Garons in September 2002 and it got additional Nord 262s.
