1961, the Nord-Aviation company launched a study for a new transport aircraft,
in order to replace the Nord 260 Super-Broussard, four of which were used
by the CEV (Centre d'Essais en Vol - Flight Test Centre). The Nord 262 prototype
made its first flight on December 24th 1962, leading the way for
the assembly of 3 pre-production aircraft, the first of which accomplished

using 26 Nord 262 "Frégate" since 1967 to carry out the following
missions :
In the early 80s, as part of a budgetary measure, the
Navy staff decided to upgrade their Nord 262A to a new Nord 262E version,
in order to spare their maritime patrol Atlantic airframes. The upgrade
consisted in the addition of an ORB-32 surveillance radar, a plotting
system identical to that of the future Atlantique and Gardian, a ARAR
12 RWR and various HF radio equipment. The 'Alpha' (nickname for the Nord
262A) transport planes were eventually withdrawn from active service in
1997, while the 'Echo' (Nord 262E) delivery started in 1982.
